Creativity Is Judging Us
There is something very strange about sitting in a room judging creativity at a moment like this.
Because after a while, it stops feeling like you are judging the work.
And starts feeling like the work is judging you.
Judging what you notice.
What you value.
What you still believe matters.
What you are willing to fight for.
What you think creativity is for.
After two days in a room with legends and peers from this industry, surrounded by people who care deeply about the smallest elements of the work, it hit me again.
Creativity is never just the artifact.
It is the intention.
The craft.
The combination.
The care.
The way image, sound, and motion come together to create emotion.
And maybe that is what felt so special about being in that room.
Not just the quality of the work.
The quality of attention.
People looking closely.
Listening closely.
Debating nuance.
Fighting for feeling.
Caring not just about whether something worked, but why it worked.
Not just what it did, but what it did to you.
That matters.
Especially now.
Because we are living through a moment where making has become dramatically easier, but making something matter still feels as rare as ever.
There is no shortage of output.
No shortage of content.
No shortage of assets.
No shortage of things that are polished, formatted, optimized, and ready to perform.
But that is not the same as resonance.
And I think that is the tension I kept feeling in the room.
So much of the modern machine is built around transaction.

Consideration.
All useful.
All necessary.
All part of the system.
But creativity has always had a larger job.

To create remembrance.
That is different.
Remembrance lives in language.

In the emotional architecture of a piece of work.
You do not remember something because it was optimized well.
You remember it because it moved differently.

That is what the best work still does.
It does not just communicate.

And in a time like this, that may be one of the clearest ways to tell whether the work is alive.
Not whether it can be made.

That, to me, is the standard now.
Because the barriers to production are falling everywhere.
Tools are making it easier to write, edit, design, generate, animate, compose, and iterate faster than ever before.
And there is something miraculous in that.
But when everything can be made, the real question changes.

Why did you make it?
And did you make something worth remembering?
That is why being in a room like this feels so important.
It reminds you that creativity is not simply a technical exercise.

It is not just efficiency with better styling.

Judgment.
Taste.
Emotion.
Purpose.
And sometimes, yes, collaboration.

And maybe that is why, in the end, it felt less like we were judging creativity.
And more like creativity was judging us.
Asking whether we still know the difference between performance and presence.

Between making more and making meaning.
Because in the end, that may be the real brief now.
Not make more.
